Unhealthy Bites & Symptoms It’s good to be aware and conscious about your weight. But these days watching weight has become more of an obsession with a few. This obsession has led to eating disorders, which takes a toll on mental and physical health. Two typical eating disorders are Anorexia nervosa and Bulimia nervosa. There are also lesser known eating disorders like Binge eating disorder and Anorexia athletica. Signs that someone is a prey Following are some signs that you may be a prey to eating disorders. No one person is going to exhibit all of the characteristics given below. At a time they may reveal only a few of them and at times all. No given symptoms are the same for 2 given people either. Messed up body image Even though anorexics and bulimics are thin, they tend to perceive them selves as being fat. They always have the feeling of being bloated. This feeling makes them diet and fast for very long periods of time to lose more and more weight. They are also very envious of thin and skinny people. They constantly seek to emulate them too. Extensive periods of fasting or dieting People, who’ve fallen prey, may indulge in long periods of abstaining from food. This may be done in the garb of fasting or dieting. Meal skipping Taking only 2 meals a day becomes like religion to them. Those suffering from these food disorders always have an excuse not to eat - they may say ‘I am not hungry, just ate with a friend, feeling ill or upset’, and so forth. They will avoid eating with other people or will eat very little food. Turns vegetarian Sometimes an anorexic or bulimic may turn to vegetarianism in order to escape eating food that has fat. He or she is likely to boast about how it is good to avoid white or read meat, and how vegetarianism is healthier. The absence of nutrients derived from meat is not replaced by the vegetarian foods that provide the same. They turn to consuming primarily low-fat items and low levels of other nutrients. Warped feelings A typical disorder prototype has the feeling that they cannot feel good about themselves unless they are thin. And the underlying irony in these cases is that he or she is never going to be thin enough to satisfy himself or her. The bad self image Low self-esteem leading to depression and worthlessness is very prominent amongst these people. They become irrational and irritable. Vehemently deny that anything is wrong with them. They do not want to be helped and sulk a lot. They may also spend excessive time being alone and not mixing up with others. Thin will make me happy People afflicted with these disorders develop a notion that everything in the world is related to their being thin. If only they were thin, they would have been luckier. If only they were thin they would be happier. If only they would be thin, they would look nice, are common thoughts that they have rehearsed to believe as the ultimate truth in life. I am bad Sometimes people who are suffering from these disorders think they do not deserve to eat or enjoy tasty food. They perceive themselves as very bad people and often starve, purge or binge. All this is like a well-deserved punishment for misperceived flaws and misdeeds they have committed. |
