Sleep

Sleep is not merely a "time out" from our busy routines. It is an essential form of deep rest, necessary for keeping our mind, body and spirit in good form. A good night's sleep gives the body - time to heal and the brain - time to process all the stimuli it has received.

Lack of sleep is called sleep deprivation. Nearly 95% of people worldwide suffer from lack of sleep at some point in their lives. Research has shown that those who suffer from lack of sleep or are unable to sleep for prolonged periods of time, are more likely to be less happy and more stressed than those getting 8 hours. Habitual sleeplessness is called insomnia.

Sleep deprivation is not only bad for us but also for people around us: tens of thousands of traffic accidents are attributed to sleepy drivers every year. Loss of sleep also increases blood sugar level, which is risky for diabetics. Given are some handy tips to fight sleeplessness and insomnia. So say goodbye to tossing and turning in bed.

Handy tip 1

Warm bath

A warm bath before bed is a great way to relax your body. It lowers BP and helps sleep better. Don't overdo it, however. You merely want to relax your body, not exhaust it. Too long in hot water and your body is drained of vitality. You could also soak yourself in some bath salts and come out refreshed and fragrant.

Handy tip 2

Sweet smelling sleep

Make yourself a ‘herbal pillow’ with dried lavender, roses, cloves, citrus, khus and other herbs to get a refreshing sleep.

Handy tip 3

Mattress matters!

Choose a mattress that supports the spine. A bed that is too hard or too soft will tire out your body. Some people claim that harder the bed, the better it is for your health. But do not suddenly jump to a very hard bed, if you have been used to softer one, otherwise you will wake up with sore muscles.

Handy tip 4

Good ‘ole milk

However filmi it may sound like, but nothing beats a cup or glass of milk at bedtime. It’s excellent for soothing jagged and tired nerves. Sooths the mind and relaxes the body. If you haven’t tried it - go ahead get a little filmi. You never know if it becomes a hit with your system.

Handy tip 5

Stygian darkness

Even though it may sound a little gloomy or scary, believe us at night the room you sleep in should be absolutely dark and quiet. There should be no annoying sources of light disturbing your slumber.

Handy tip 6

Get rid of annoying lights

Often when we go to sleep, we do not realize that there are innumerable sources of light in our bedroom. For instance, take that illuminated florescent clock that goes tick tock tick tock on your bedside. Even though it may aid you to see the time in the night, it can disturb your sleep. Another typical example is the light that seeps in the room through the crack in the door. Every time there is a gush of wind, not only the door will creek, but it will also increase or decrease the light coming in your room.

Handy tip 7

Choosy TV viewing

Ok. This is one of the most important rules to fight sleeplessness. Watching TV generally excites the mind and we tend to keep thinking of what we saw on TV even after we have switched it off. And if we are thinking too much, it does not let us relax. Stop watching TV at least 2 hours before you get into bed if this is the case with you. Otherwise be very prudent about what you watch. Do not watch gory stuff or something that has violence and action.

Handy tip 8

Pretend you are dead!

Now don’t over work your mind for this one. We are talking about yoga here. Shavasana is one of the best techniques for relaxation and falling to sleep. One could also try Yog Nidra.

Handy tip 9

Rev up your imagination

If nothing then this sure will work. Just lie there and close your eyes. And go on a trip to where ever you want. Of course, in your thoughts only. Imagine that you are having fun at one of the sexiest of beaches in the world. For some peaceful alternative you could imagine you are visiting a hill station or the Himalayan caves, full of beauty and serenity.
